I have a slightly different question. What would your advice be in terms of advertising as paid search in Google and Bing. Do they give equally good value or is one more cost effective? Does it differ by category as Bing has some extra features for certain industries (Like travel I think)? Does Bing achieve lower cost per clicks as the demand from advertisers is lower?

Keep up the great work, Nick

Glad you found the post useful James!

Sadly in the UK, Google is still dominant and for our site and many we review for clients, Bing << 10%.

I wonder how it will pick up in the UK. I guess for every 10 visits we get from Google we might get one from Bing for our little blog site it’s hard to get an inkling as our traffic is low anyway, but for my day job in the UK working for a big NGO we see the top 3 being Google, Bing and Yahoo in terms of the stacking order for inbound traffic. In the last rolling month Google brought approx 8000, Bing 300 and Yahoo 150 visits via natural search.

I wonder if the difference in the numbers are because we don’t rank as well, or if this is actually more to do with user uptake on the other search engines in the UK being so much smaller.

I will do some comparisons on the ranking with Market Samurai to see how things change over time.

I also wonder if the shift (if there is one) will be because users try the other search engines and genuinely feel a need to migrate based on perceiving better more relevant results.

I guess Google have so many other things on the boil they will never go away though.
